Restored Bridge Fascia (Rendering)
The Glen Island Approach Bridge is the sole connection for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to enjoy Glen Island Park in New Rochelle, NY. The popular park is open to the public year-round and contains the Glen Island Harbour Club, boathouses, picnic facilities and a public beach. The bridge is owned and operated by Westchester County Department of Public Works and serves as an important transportation link between the park and the New Rochelle community. Built in 1930, the bridge is recognized for its historical engineering and architectural significance and has been deemed eligible for preservation by the National Register of Historic Places. However, due to substandard features, prolonged age, and poor condition of the existing structures, the bridge is under need of repair.
Restored Bridge Fascia (Rendering)
The Glen Island Bridge Reconstruction Project will provide much needed safety improvements, upgrading the bridge deck, providing steel repairs, electrical and mechanical upgrades, new masonry and painting, and sidewalk replacement. During construction, a temporary bridge will be built to the north of the permanent bridge so that the community can continue to enjoy Glen Island Park while repairs are underway. This will expedite the construction schedule, increase safety, and ensure that disruptions to visitors and mariners are minimal.
Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Improvements (Rendering)
In September 2024, the project was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure Corporation in the amount of $79,670,066. The construction phase will commence on October 1, 2024, and is anticipated to be completed in December 2026. Westchester County and Kiewit are committed to administering a successful project while working in tandem with the community to make certain the needs of all bridge, park and harbor users are satisfied.

Roadway Closures |
|
The east sidewalk remains permanently closed. The pedestrian walkway remains diverted to the west sidewalk which will remain open through this time period. The existing bridge will have single lane closures continuing from week of March 31, 2025 through April 25, 2015 from 7:00AM through 5:00PM daily. |

Navigation Channel Closures |
|
The Navigational Channel closure is closed and will remain closed through May 22, 2025. This closure will be in place for installation of under-bridge-suspended-scaffolding which will be required for paint removal from the existing structural steel. Large floating cranes and barges will arrive to the Glen Island Bridge on Friday April 4, 2025 and will remain on-site until May 22, 2025. This equipment will intermittently block the channel completely during the time period of April 7, 2025 through April 21, 2025. |

USCG Safety Zone |

USCG Safety Zone is in effect throughout the duration of the project. Operate any vessels in the area with reduced speed and increased caution. |

Upcoming Construction Operations |

Relocation of public access driveway to the Neptune Island Public parking area. Driveway is currently on Glen Island Approach Road and will be relocated to Harbor Lane for the duration of the project. Structural repairs below the roadway at the Glen Island abutment. Installation of shield under the existing bridge. Painting of existing bridge. Placement of temporary bridge abutments on Neptune Island and Glen Island. Setting of temporary bridge spans. Daytime and weekend work from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, expect periods of loud construction noise. |
